The short answer
Many thermostats hold the compressor off for about three minutes after it stops. The delay keeps the compressor from restarting against its own pressure. If you just switched the system off and on, wait those few minutes before you decide the air conditioner is dead. A click and a pause is normal. Warm air during that pause is normal too.
If it still will not start, or it starts and the air stays warm, the delay was not the fault. Leave it off and call. Rooted Mechanical will measure the system and tell you whether it is a capacitor, a contactor, a coil, or something that means replacement. That visit is AC repair.
